Main Uses and Precautions of cable lockouts

Cable lockouts — also known as single-unit hardware locks — are typically made of a steel body and a polypropylene handle, constructed from high-wear-resistant stainless steel plates. They are strong, durable, easy to notice, and coated with anti-rust paint.

These locks are designed to solve the problem of multiple workers managing the same machine or pipeline. When maintenance work is required, the power supply must be completely disconnected, and the control switch locked, to prevent anyone from accidentally turning the power back on and causing injury to maintenance personnel.

Main Uses

When only one person is performing maintenance, a standard padlock is enough to lock the main switch. However, when several people are working on the same equipment, a safety cable lock should be used. Each worker attaches their own padlock to the cable lock. Even if one person finishes and removes their lock, the power supply remains locked. The equipment can only be re-energized after every worker has finished their work and removed their own lock.

In this way, safety cable locks make it possible for several people to safely manage and maintain the same machine or pipeline. Each person can lock the machine at their own point, ensuring it stays shut down during maintenance. Only when the last worker removes their padlock can the machine be restarted.

Precautions

  1. Use the correct main cable — never mix different cables.
  2. Install the self-locking device correctly on the upper roller (the raised part).
  3. Before installation, loosen the safety screw. Turn the pawl assembly counterclockwise to open, then after loading the main cable, turn it clockwise to close. Tighten the safety screw lightly — do not overtighten.
  4. After installation, check whether the self-locking device moves smoothly. If it doesn’t slide freely, adjust the spring as needed.

Test the lock several times (1–3 times) to make sure it works properly. If you find anything unusual, stop using it immediately. Never attempt to modify or repair the equipment on your own. The safety cable must always be used with a self-locking device.
